BACKGROUND:
Vane || Granblue Fantasy Wiki
CRAU Note: Vane hasn't changed much from being in Duplicity, other than having a relationship with Percival and becoming mildly accepting of polyamory.
PERSONALITY:
A simple, pleasant and caring young man, Vane is pretty straightforward as a person. He comes from a humble background, holding no status of any sort, and worked his way into the Order of the White Knights of the Kingdom of Feendrache until he eventually gained rank as the Vice Captain under his best friend, Lancelot.
Vane's loyalty is unshakable, be it for his best friend, or the country he serves. He displays both a sense of simple-mindedness where it comes to his dedication, and careful focus for his loyalties. He believes in doing good and maintaining it- it's likely impossible for him to have a rotten bone in his body. His kindness is overt and hard to miss, from all the care he gives to even strangers, down to his close friends.
This is further shown in how, once he becomes Vice Captain, he cares for his subordinates, personally looking out for them and even remembering their anniversaries. He goes out of his way to even help suggest and prepare a nice dinner for one of his soldiers who doesn't have a present for his wife, and constantly looks out for Lancelot and Gran/Djeeta, who they often adventure with.
Vane has somewhat of an innocent outlook on life, but is earnest in his simplicity. He doesn't like to complicate things, and while, for a bit, he does linger in a more comfortable and complacent space of just following the guidance and orders of his superior, Lancelot, he eventually comes into his own once he's promoted. Approachable and kind, Vane believes in following his heart, for better or worse.
His loyalty and love for his best friend Lancelot makes up a core part of his personality- having known the knight from a young age, Vane is very attached to Lancelot as a result of him having lost his parents when he was little. He was looked after by all the old ladies in their village, as well as Lancelot who fulfilled both roles of close friend and playful sibling to him (he'd scare Vane as a child with a pumpkin head at Halloween, leaving Vane crying to his grandma and resulting in a hatred of pumpkins as an adult)
However, it's through Lancelot that Vane became determined to look out for the people he loves, Lancelot the most due to him being quite terrible at doing that for himself at times.
Vane is devoted, and always attentive to the people he cares for (and even to some he doesn't entirely get along with!) and even has a boyish, playful streak where he ends up teasing his friends, or making silly puns, or even giving them affectionate nicknames. He likes making people smile, and by finding ways to do them, he often succeeds, even if his naivete and dim-wittedness risks getting him into trouble.
He tends to be easily distracted, which becomes the cause of why he occasionally gets lost, but he has an incredible amount of perseverance, ready to do what it takes to make it through whatever challenge is placed before him. He's not afraid to take on a difficult task, willing to learn and adapt so he can perform his duty to the best of his abilities. And of course, it doesn't mean he's a pushover or stupid, as he's able to discern certain things others might not have noticed, or speak up to anyone he knows is in the wrong.
His growth and maturity shows best in how he takes a group of new trainees under his wing, teaching them the ways of knighthood, bonding with them and leading them as best as he can. Keeping a light, "big brother"ly attitude, he's able to win the respect of many, and while he admits he's nothing compared to his friend Lancelot, it doesn't mean he intends to be in his shadow all the time.
This of course, doesn't seem to do much for his popularity in other aspects- perhaps because of his simplicity or his ability to not be immediately attentive to particulars, he seems to not have as much luck attracting anyone outside of being friends. This is shown in his Valentine's day quotes where he wants to pretend the chocolate he's made was given to him by a girl, and even tries to make up a story about a fake one, but is unable to form a lie, and feeling depressed about it.
He also doesn't seem to have many close friends outside of Lancelot, while amicable and friendly to many, mostly knowing the older women in his village, suggesting an insecurity or inability to be able to accept others' aid while wanting to always be present for them instead, perhaps to the level of overcompensating. He expresses as much to Lancelot when they get lost, saying he wanted to grow up to protect Lancelot, rather than having everyone looking after him. He was also a crybaby as a child, and in some scenarios, he does get overly emotional (in happiness, mostly) as an adult, showing his purity of heart and sincerity.
Despite this, he expresses kindness in all his actions, always willing to help others, get his friends involved, and leave no one behind. It's what makes him who he is, and there's little that could ever change that.
POWERS/ABILITIES:
Vane's element is water, and he channels it through his attacks. He fights using a halberd, and is mostly a defensive/tanking character but with massive damage output the lower his health goes.
Wild Bash - Gains a repel effect for physical/magical attacks for up to three hits
Risky Distraction - Huge water-based damage based on how low Vane's health is (the lower it is, the higher damage he does)
Breakthrough - Taking 40% damage to himself, he can raise his own hostility and greatly raise his attack the lower his health goes, as well as tanking damage.
Arm Destruction II - 400% Water damage to a foe, lowering their attack and fire-based attacks from enemies become even weaker
Soul Eruption - When very nearly knocked out, he can to full health and remove all debuffs, sharply boosting all his stats. He obviously can't keep doing this, of course!
Loewenbein Jagt - A limit break style attack that does massive water damage to a foe and raises Vane's defense by 30%
INVENTORY:
- His halberd
- His grandma's picture
- His device from Duplicity
- A backpack of his clothes
MOONBLESSING: Sanguis
